Your Opportunity
Stantec is currently seeking a highly motivated, personable and organized Intermediate Vegetation Ecologist to work within our terrestrial environmental services team. The position will be based in our AB
-Calgary, or Edmonton office, with the possibility to be based in other Alberta offices.
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead and conduct wetland assessments and vegetation inventories with a focus on communities and species of concern, including some familiarity with listed rare species in Alberta
Conduct environmental assessments for municipal, provincial, and federally regulated projects in multiple sectors, including oil and gas, land development, transportation, renewable energy
Work on a variety of natural resource planning projects, including natural area inventories and biophysical assessments
Support preparation of project scopes and budgets for proposal submissions
Interact directly with internal and external clients and contribute to developing relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders
Attend client meetings and participate in regulatory strategy development for projects
Ensure Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures are adhered to and participate in QA/QC reviews of deliverables
Provide training, technical direction and mentoring to less experienced staff
Participate in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
Coach and mentor junior staff
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Proficient in and consistently demonstrates and promotes policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (if applicable)
Proficient at technical writing
Skilled in communications and technical information exchange with clients, engineers and scientists, government regulators and agencies, and academia, as well as non-technical communication to the public
Proficient as a field crew lead, planning and executing field surveys
Proficient identification of plants of Alberta. Familiarity with plants in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is an asset
Familiarity with the Alberta Wetland Classification System and wetland identification and delineation procedures
Ability to manipulate and analyze data
Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence
Ability to provide written and verbal directions on project delivery
Shows leadership in striving to continuously improve technical performance
Champions new ideas and initiatives and creates an environment that supports creativity and innovation
Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships
Drives collaborative efforts within the region and beyond to deliver consistent, high quality and appropriately scoped technical work
Good driving record and valid Class 5 driver’s license required
At least five years of experience successfully executing technical aspects of medium to complex projects
Proficient in MS Office applications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in biology, or related field.
Professional designation (P. Biol. or R.P.Bio).
Minimum 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education (e.g., advanced degree) and experience.
