Job Description & How to Apply Below
Imperial works to responsibly develop Canada’s energy resources, applying technology and innovation to supply affordable, accessible and reliable energy while reducing emissions. We are seeking a skilled Oil Sands Geoscientist to join the Kearl Technical Department.
Lead Geoscientist – Oil Sands Stratigraphy and Reservoir Characterization
Drive mine performance by unlocking the geologic complexity of the McMurray Formation through expert strati graphic interpretation and advanced reservoir characterization.
Technical Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement: Mentor and guide geoscientists and junior staff; engage with reservoir engineering, mine planning, and operations teams to communicate subsurface uncertainty and provide actionable recommendations.
Strati graphic Interpretation & Depositional Framework Development: Lead detailed strati graphic interpretation and regional-to-local correlation; develop sequence strati graphic frameworks incorporating core, well log, seismic, and outcrop data.
Geological Modeling & Reservoir Characterization: Develop, maintain, and refine high‑resolution 3D geological models supporting reservoir development, mine planning, and in‑situ operations.
Integration of Subsurface Data: Combine core descriptions, wireline logs, seismic interpretations, and analog datasets into unified geological frameworks.
Resource Evaluation & Reserves Support: Provide geological input into resource assessments and reserves estimations; support volumetric calculations and resource classification.
Drilling Support & Subsurface Execution: Support drilling programs through well planning, placement recommendations, and real‑time geological interpretation.
Production Optimization & Reservoir Performance: Collaborate with mining engineers to optimize production and explain reservoir performance trends.
Monitoring, Uncertainty Management & Continuous Improvement: Evaluate geological models against new data; identify key uncertainties and lead initiatives to improve workflows and data quality.
