Responsibilities

  • Manage the quality, quantity, and discharge of groundwater, surface water, and leachate at various Waste Services facilities to ensure full regulatory compliance
  • Oversee site remediation and long-term engineering management for designated contaminated sites, acting as the owner's representative and technical lead
  • May provide direct supervision and guidance to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) Sampling Group, supporting air, water, and soil monitoring activities
  • Review, analyze, and report on extensive environmental monitoring networks, including professional signing and stamping of drawings and reports where applicable
  • Provide expert technical and project support to internal project teams, consulting partners, and external regulators
  • Perform cost/benefit analyses and financial management for assigned environmental projects and contracts
  • Support environmental management initiatives including ENVISO, wildlife/plant monitoring, and site sustainability programs
Requirements and Qualifications
  • University Degree in Sciences or Engineering with specialization in Environmental Sciences with a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in an environmental occupation directly related to wastewater treatment, pollution prevention, waste minimization or law enforcement including surface water, groundwater and contaminated sites management OR Completion of a recognized two-year diploma program in Sciences or Engineering with specialization in Environmental Sciences with a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in an environmental occupation directly related to wastewater treatment, pollution prevention, waste minimization or law enforcement including surface water, groundwater and contaminated sites management
  • Experience in industrial and/or municipal environmental work, environmental project management, or environmental monitoring experience, specializing in groundwater and surface water management
  • Assets:
    • Master's degree in geosciences or equivalent
    • Experience as an environmental specialist/scientist or an environmental project manager in landfills (active and/or closed) and experience with contaminated sites
    • Experience working with environmental regulators
    • Professional Designation (P.Eng., P. Chem or related)
    Skills required for success
    • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills to build effective relationships with collaborators, operating staff, vendors, and government agencies
    • Sound problem-solving abilities to evaluate complex environmental data and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions
    • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, with proficiency in data tools (e.g., Excel/Google Sheets) and analytical reporting
    • Leadership qualities with a supportive approach to supervising technical and sampling teams
    • Understanding of and the ability to implement sampling and analysis methods and standards
    • Ability to carry out cost/benefit analysis of specific designs, plans, programs and project options
    • Knowledge of environmental management systems, applicable laws, bylaws and regulations and legislative requirements pertaining to surface water and groundwater
    • Knowledge of standard statistical techniques, procedures and research methods
    • Knowledge, understanding and experience in environmental performance indicators, procedures and processes
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to analyze problems, cooperatively develop solutions and provide recommendations to solve problems, particularly relating to solid waste operations/processes and its effects on the environment through land, water and air

    Conditions of Employment
    • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
