Position: Biomanufacturing Insect Technician [Rolling Applications]

Ready to be the foundation of innovation? Every scientific breakthrough starts with a perfectly managed fly population

Changing the world—one fruit fly at a time

We’ve developed a novel insect-based expression platform to enable bio-products across humanity’s most critical verticals.

We’re unleashing the next biorevolution

At Future Fields, we are continually learning and evolving. We know we don’t have all the answers, but we try to ask all the questions. We believe in “failing forward” and leveraging our mistakes to help us grow. We never want our team to feel constrained by the status quo and we don’t judge ideas based on where they come from.

We actively work to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and psychological safety through transparency, structure, and open communication. We know it sounds cliché, but every employee really is a valued and equal member of the Future Fields team.

Come find your purpose with Future Fields

We are a rapidly growing venture-backed startup (with support from awesome investors including Bee Partners, Y Combinator, BDC Climate Tech, R7 Partners, Toyota Ventures and Amplify Capital). We’ve even had a shoutout from Ironman himself! Joining our team now means you’ll have the opportunity to shape our culture and products, to lead others, and to influence the direction of our company.

Perhaps most importantly, you’ll be joining a team that is genuinely energized by this work and the meaningful potential of biotech to change the world.

Please note this is a rolling posting without a fixed Final date to receive applications. We will review applications on an ongoing basis to fill current openings as well as build a talent roster for our upcoming growth milestones. Because we take our time to thoughtfully review candidates as submissions arrive, timelines can flex - we truly appreciate your patience, and we will be in touch directly if your profile is a strong match for an interview round.

The Biomanufacturing Insect Technician plays a critical role in supporting our most important asset—fruit flies! Yep, you read that right. We farm fruit flies (in our super cool custom-built Insect Rearing Facility, Instar 1.0). This is a full-time, hourly position, with a 5-day work schedule (3 weekdays, 2 weekend days).

The primary mission of this role is to keep our insect rearing operations running like clockwork. This role will have varied responsibilities including fly rearing, preparing fly media, sample collection, washing dishes and data entry. This role provides many learning opportunities across a diverse set of areas and exposure to the inner workings of a scaling biotech company.

The Biomanufacturing Insect Technician will work under the supervision of our Upstream Processing Lead, Kennedy, and will actively participate in collaborative discussions driving the core work at Future Fields.

This Role Will Own (day-to-day Operations)

  • Media preparation:
Prepare fly media from food-grade ingredients. This is a time-sensitive, multi-component task requiring excellent parallel-processing skills to ensure consistent batch quality.
  • Data logging & integrity: track all metrics of insect rearing (cages, fly strains, population mass, harvest mass) in our database with a high level of accuracy to maintain strain integrity.
  • Biomass harvesting: harvest biomass in a timely, consistent manner that strictly adheres to established protocols and best practices.
  • Sanitation & turnaround:
Wash and sanitize dishes, fly media prep tools, fly cages, and component parts at an expedient…
