Director, Public Affairs & Stakeholder Relations
Reports to:
Vice President, Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations
Reporting to the Vice President, Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations, the Director, Public Affairs & Stakeholder Relations is accountable for leading ABCRC’s public affairs, government relations and policy advocacy strategy in support of the organization’s mandate and strategic priorities.
The role serves as a senior advisor to executive leadership and the VP of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relationship on government, regulatory and stakeholder matters, and is responsible for building and maintaining strategic relationships across government, industry and key system partners.
KEY FUNCTIONS &
ACCOUNTABILITIES Lead the development and execution of ABCRC’s government relations, public affairs and policy advocacy strategy aligned with corporate priorities
Own and manage ABCRC’s relationships with government, elected officials, ministers’ offices and senior public service
Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across industry organizations, system partners and external stakeholders
Monitor legislative, regulatory and public policy developments impacting ABCRC, the beverage container recycling system and environmental outcomes
Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the Vice President, Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors on public affairs, government and stakeholder matters
Prepare briefing materials, presentations, correspondence and engagement materials for leadership and Board use
Support ABCRC’s participation in stakeholder consultations, government meetings and industry engagement opportunities
Develop and maintain a stakeholder engagement framework, identifying key relationships, risks and collaboration opportunities
Act as a strategic conduit to producers, manufacturers and brand owners, coordinating alignment and advocacy efforts
Monitor emerging issues and provide timely guidance on reputational, operational or stakeholder risks
Work closely with internal teams and external advisors to ensure alignment of messaging and engagement strategies
Represent ABCRC at meetings, events and forums with professionalism and credibility
Support Board committees and leadership with reporting, updates and strategic insights
Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations
EDUCATION AND TRAINING The Director, Public Affairs & Stakeholder Relations will have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Business, Communications, Environmental Studies or a related field.
Additional training in government relations, public affairs, stakeholder engagement or environmental policy is considered an asset.
EXPERIENCE The Director must have a minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in public affairs, government relations, public policy or stakeholder relations.
Experience with in government, a minister’s office or a senior political staff role is strongly preferred.
Experience in regulated environments, industry associations, producer responsibility organizations or multi-stakeholder systems is also considered an asset.
Demonstrated experience developing strategic engagement plans, preparing executive-level materials and supporting senior leadership or Boards is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS Strong understanding of Alberta’s public policy and government environment
Proven ability to build and maintain trusted stakeholder relationships
Strategic thinker with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop practical solutions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of executive-level materials
Sound judgement, discretion and diplomacy when handling sensitive matters
Ability to balance diverse stakeholder interests while supporting organizational priorities
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
Self-starter with initiative and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
