Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $98,090 – $115,400 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

As an Engagement Specialist, you’ll take proactive steps to enhance awareness of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) initiatives through outreach efforts, relationship nurturing, and strategizing engagement activities focused on regulatory evolution and modernization.
Responsibilities   Provide information and education to the public, Indigenous communities, industry, municipalities, and environmental groups within Alberta.
Respond to issues and concerns brought to the AER, support others in navigating conflict, and help colleagues manage challenging interactions with external stakeholders.
Act as a subject matter expert in engagement assessment and planning, and provide advice about impacted communities and Albertans related to incidents or regulatory orders.
Support the organization’s strategic goals, ensuring priorities reflect building the AER’s credibility and trust.
Interact with local industry, Indigenous communities and stakeholders about the AER and its mandate throughout the lifecycle of oil, gas, and mining activities.
Represent the AER at local meetings and multi‑stakeholder tables, providing holistic insights to regional challenges and opportunities.
Interpret and navigate regulatory information and processes for others, influencing improvement opportunities for the AER.
Anticipate and respond to inquiries, complaints, and feedback.
Assess and plan engagement as new decisions, regulatory tools and AER initiatives are contemplated, analyzed, and installed, including public feedback processes.
Provide situationally aware advice to internal business units and elevate local intelligence, including trends, potential gaps, and opportunities, to influence an effective organizational response.
De‑escalate conflict and make appropriate referrals to other AER technical and professional experts.
Qualifications   Technical Diploma in Conflict Resolution, Communications, Education, Environmental, Land Agent, Land Management, or a related field.
5+ years’ experience working with industry, Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
Advanced knowledge and experience in effective communication, adult education and public speaking.
Proven experience in conflict resolution with the ability to adapt to change and evolving work priorities.
Knowledge of the AER mandate, energy industry, government, industry, and public perspectives related to the energy sector.
Ability to work independently and make situational decisions.

Experience with online engagement techniques, including social media.
Public policy and policy implementation processes, conflict resolution, and facilitation training or certification are considered an asset.
Indigenous awareness training, H2S Alive, Standard First Aid training are considered an asset.
Legal entitlement to work in Canada.
Pre‑placement medical clearance, a fully valid Class5 driver’s license, and a positive driving record.
Physical ability to lift over 30lbs.
Travel required, including approximately one overnight trip per month.
