Senior Planner

Our client is seeking a Senior Planner to provide leadership and technical expertise in municipal planning, development services, and regional planning initiatives. This role is responsible for overseeing complex planning applications, guiding policy development, supervising planning staff, and advancing strategic planning objectives that support sustainable community growth. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership capabilities, extensive municipal planning experience, and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships within a dynamic public-sector environment.

Your success will be defined by your ability to:
  • Lead and oversee complex planning and development initiatives
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and mentorship to planning staff
  • Manage land development applications, policy planning, and regional planning matters
  • Develop, implement, and maintain statutory plans, bylaws, and planning policies
  • Represent the municipality in discussions with regional partners, stakeholders, and public bodies
  • Provide strategic planning advice and recommendations to leadership and Council
  • Lead cross-functional projects, public engagement initiatives, and consultant relationships
  • Ensure planning decisions align with municipal objectives, legislation, and industry best practices
  • Build collaborative relationships with internal departments, developers, and external stakeholders
  • Balance multiple priorities while delivering high-quality planning outcomes in a complex environment
  • Your strengths include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning or a related field
  • Full membership or eligibility for membership with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal planning or consulting environment
  • Strong knowledge of urban planning principles, land use planning processes, and municipal legislation
  • Experience leading complex planning projects, policy initiatives, and development applications
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and staff supervision experience
  • Strong project management, research, and analytical capabilities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence diverse stakeholders
  • Political awareness and sound judgment when managing sensitive planning matters
  • Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and regulations while providing strategic recommendations
  • Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with planning and design software is considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License required
