About the Alberta Chief Firearms Office (ACFO)
The ACFO is responsible for administering the Canadian Firearms Program in Alberta. The ACFO issues firearms licenses within the province, regulates shooting ranges and shooting clubs, oversees the delivery of Canadian Firearms Safety Courses, provides regulatory information to Albertans, and advocates on behalf of law‑abiding firearms owners. The ACFO works closely with law enforcement and justice system partners to enhance public safety.

Federal and Provincial Legislation
In Canada, firearms are regulated by the federal Firearms Act and Part III of the Criminal Code. The Government of Alberta administers the Canadian Firearms Program, Alberta Firearms Act, and its regulations. The Alberta Firearms Act also clarifies the responsibilities of Alberta’s Chief Firearms Officer.

Job Overview
"Help shape the future of firearms policy in Alberta and contribute to public safety outcomes that matter. As a Senior Policy Analyst with the Alberta Chief Firearms Office, you will lead complex policy analysis and provide strategic advice that directly informs provincial decision‑making in a high‑profile and evolving regulatory environment."

Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Research, as a Senior Policy Analyst, you are responsible for driving responsible provincial firearms policy development through independent research and analysis of specified topics and applicable legislation and preparing materials for senior/executive audiences. The role requires demonstrating good project management practices when independently planning, coordinating, and executing complex assignments and projects.

Responsibilities

Work in accordance with the Firearms Act, the Canadian Firearms Program requirements, and related federal and provincial legislation.

Train and mentor Policy Analysts and others in refining legislation, regulations, and operational policies relevant to firearms licensing and authorizations.

Support ACFO leadership in achieving the mandate, goals, and operations of the ACFO.

Develop administrative and operational policies that facilitate program delivery across the ACFO.

Work collaboratively with staff across the branch to develop standard operating procedures, policies, and other deliverables, minimizing controversy and maximizing understanding among stakeholders.

Liaise, collaborate, and represent the unit on national working groups and various ad hoc project teams.

Advise on business process enhancement initiatives and improvement opportunities by noting changing business needs, best practices, and industry trends.
