Position: Principal Industrial Policy Planner (Planner II)

Step into a key role where your expertise shapes the future of Edmonton's industrial growth! We are looking for a dedicated professional to guide strategic land use policy and foster sustainable economic development across our city.

As the Principal Industrial Policy Planner, you will lead the implementation of the Industrial Investment Action Plan through statutory plans and policy updates. Reporting to a Senior Planner, you will manage project schedules, direct research, and lead the creation or amendment of industrial Area Structure Plans. This temporary role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and internal teams to drive long-term strategic results.

What will you do?

Lead and manage updates to industrial Area Structure Plans, policy documents, and regulatory guidelines to align with corporate growth goals

Guide the creation of new industrial Area Structure Plans from project inception through to final Council approval

Prepare plan amendment bylaws, Council reports, presentations, and formal policy documentation

Collaborate with internal operational teams to evaluate tradeoffs and land-use impacts

Connect with industrial landowners, development representatives, and engagement participants to gather technical insights and inform policy

Provide project direction, guidance, and feedback to junior planners supporting industrial initiatives

Review recommendations on complex industrial Land Development Applications (LDAs) and attend pre-application discussions with applicants

Maintain comprehensive project management frameworks, including project charters, Gantt charts, risk logs, and decision registers

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a degree related to the functions specific to the positionA minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience in land use policy or land development planning

Assets:

Project Management certification (e.g., PMP)
Skills required for success:

Advanced policy planning expertise, with structural competence in interpreting municipal land-use tools and policy frameworks

Strong collaborative leadership to align diverse perspectives across internal departments and external organizations

Effective communication skills to execute clear public engagement and present policy proposals directly to Council and senior leaders

Rigorous organizational capability to document decisions, manage schedules, and track multi-phase project milestones independently

Strategic problem-solving skills to navigate competing development priorities and complex urban land scenarios

Analytical proficiency in evaluating technical reports, contract deliverables, and land development applications

Mentorship skills to provide clear task direction, review deliverables, and support the professional growth of junior team members

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
