The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, emergency response and recovery, policing and police oversight and public safety. The ministry works to ensure the development, availability and access to Restorative Justice, Victim Services, and specialized courts and administers federal firearms legislation and advocates for Alberta's lawful firearms owners and promotes safety.

The Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) was created in July 2025, and once operational, will strengthen Alberta's existing policing model and complement the province's current police services. The ASPS will help fill law enforcement service gaps and ensure its law enforcement resources are deployed efficiently to meet Alberta's evolving public safety needs.

ASPS Inspectors ensure operational excellence, risk mitigation, and adherence to legal and human rights standards in a high-liability policing environment. The Inspector will play a key role in the development of assigned areas within the ASPS and will be essential in assisting the transition of the Alberta Sheriffs to the ASPS.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Inspector, Professional Standards Branch, is responsible for ensuring that matters involving officer conduct, public complaints, use-of-force incidents, policy violations, and other conduct-related concerns are managed in accordance with the Police Act, Peace Officer Act, applicable regulations, and established policing standards. The Inspector provides leadership and oversight for the intake, assessment, investigation, and resolution of complaints and conduct matters, ensuring processes are procedurally fair, legally defensible, transparent, and aligned with principles of public accountability.

As a member of the leadership team, you will provide strategic direction for the Professional Standards Branch through the development of complaint management frameworks, policies, and procedures, while leading initiatives focused on risk mitigation, organizational learning, and complaint reduction. You will oversee investigative practices, governance processes, and branch operations to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and professional standards.

Operating within a highly scrutinized policing oversight environment, you will maintain effective relationships and ensure alignment with external review and oversight bodies, including the Police Review Commission (PRC), Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), Law Enforcement Review Board (LERB), Investigative Services Team (IST)/Peace Officer Program, Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services, and Alberta Justice and Crown Prosecutors. You will ensure that professional standards matters can withstand external review, appeal, and judicial scrutiny.

In addition, you will provide expert advice to executive leadership on disciplinary and non-disciplinary matters, complex investigations, and emerging risks, while representing the Service in formal review, appeal, and oversight proceedings.
