The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking.
The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.
Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) leads and oversees all emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness and responses in the province. It provides direct emergency management support and advice to local authorities and Government of Alberta ministries through:
- Emergency management training and education
- Response coordination and resource support
- Disaster recovery assessments and financial assistance
AEMA also administers key programs including Alberta Emergency Alerts, the 911 program and standards, and the Alberta First Responders Radio Communication System (AFRRCS).
Reporting to the Deputy Minister, Public Safety and Emergency Services, the Managing Director, Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) provides executive leadership, strategic vision, and overall direction for Alberta's emergency management system. This role is responsible for shaping the future of emergency management across the province, ensuring Alberta remains prepared to prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from increasingly complex and evolving emergencies.
As the Government of Alberta's senior emergency management leader, the successful candidate will provide strategic oversight of the AEMA, guide province-wide emergency management planning, and foster a coordinated, integrated approach across ministries, municipalities, Indigenous communities, federal partners, and key stakeholders. The role requires the ability to anticipate emerging risks and trends, drive innovation, and position Alberta as a leader in emergency management excellence.
The Managing Director will provide strategic direction to key governance and decision-making, influencing policy, priorities, and system-wide readiness across government. Building strong relationships and exercising sound judgment in complex and politically sensitive environments will be critical to success. The Managing Director will represent Alberta at federal, provincial, and territorial committees, advancing provincial interests, shaping national emergency management policy and priorities, and fostering collaborative partnerships that enhance Alberta's preparedness and resilience.
The ideal candidate will bring significant credibility and a proven track record of leadership in emergency management, with demonstrated success working collaboratively across governments and agencies to achieve shared outcomes.
You are a seasoned executive with significant leadership experience in emergency management, public safety, or a related field within complex, high-profile organizations. You have a proven ability to set strategic direction, lead enterprise-wide initiatives, influence policy and decision-making, and build trusted partnerships across governments, Indigenous communities, and key stakeholders. Recognized for your strategic foresight, political acumen, and collaborative leadership style, you excel at navigating complex operational and policy environments, driving results, and leading through crisis and change.
You bring exceptional judgment, communication, and resource stewardship skills, along with a demonstrated ability to advance priorities of provincial significance. Experience in emergency management operations is highly desirable. A degree combined with related experience in the government sector is preferred.
$10,870.79 bi-weekly ($283,727annually)
