Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is currently seeking a Genetics Technologist I to join the Genetics and Genomics team at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). As the Genetics Technologist I, you will provide technical expertise and perform both routine and specialized work processing patient samples for chromosome analysis in the Edmonton Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory. In this role, you will execute specific diagnostic procedures including preparation and culturing of peripheral bloods, amniotic fluids, chorionic villus specimens, bone marrow aspirates and solid tissues.
Possessing previous experience and specialized skills in molecular cytogenetic techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), you will be responsible for casework involving chromosome and microscope FISH analysis, interpretation, and digitally capturing these images, making the final preparation and annotation of karyograms, including complex Cancer Cytogenetic cases.

Description:
As a Clinical Genetics Technologist (CGT) I, you will perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques according to established procedures. You will also participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing. Other duties include but are not limited to maintaining lab equipment and supplies, training students and fellows/residents, participating in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.
