Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.
As our Human Resources Generalist, you will collaborate with management, technical and support staff across all our locations to support the end-to-end employee lifecycle for field, laboratory and office-based technical and support staff working within Geotechnical, Construction Materials, and Environmental Engineering and Sciences disciplines. Thurber has a national team of approximately 550 employees working out of locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
The Human Resources Generalist executes day-to-day Human Resources operations, under the guidance and direction of the Human Resources Manager, partnering with technical discipline managers and firm leadership to support our technical staff. This role supports a high-performing, billable workforce while maintaining compliance with applicable legislation and professional guidelines.
This position is an office-based role in our Edmonton, Alberta location. Following successful integration into the team and sufficient familiarity with internal practices and people, flexibility to work occasionally from home is available to meet life’s needs.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe HR Generalist serves as a guide to connect the needs of our business with those of our people in our day-to-day and long-term business endeavours, in alignment with Thurber’s culture, values, sustainability, legislation, and ethical conduct.

- Contribute thoughts and ideas toward continual improvement of departmental services.
- Research and prepare job descriptions and provide support and guidance for talent acquisition processes, including supporting and conducting interviewing and screening.
- Provide support and guidance for onboarding and orientation processes.
- Provide support and guidance on training and coaching for staff.
- Execute, maintain and provide input on human resources programs and maintain human resources information and related records systems.
- Guide and support offboarding processes, including terminations and exit interview processes.
- Guide managers and staff through performance reviews, professional development plans, conflict resolution, and investigations.
- Provide support and guidance for leaves of absence, disability benefits, return to work and modified work processes.
- Maintain current knowledge in and advise managers and staff on provincial employment standards and relevant legislation, and professional engineering association guidelines.
- Advise managers and employees on the interpretation of human resources policies, compensation and benefits programs.
- Guide and support annual compensation review processes.
- Contribute to and support knowledge and capabilities growth within the Human Resources team, including supporting integration and training of new team members.
- Work collaboratively with other Group Services teams, such as Information Technology and Health and Safety, to contribute Human Resources perspectives and processes to business needs and decision processes.
- Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5 to 10 years of progressive HR experience across the entire employee life cycle, preferably within an engineering, consulting, professional and/or project-based technical sector.
- Certified Human Resources Professional (CPHR) designation is preferred.
- Solid understanding of relevant legislation, its interpretation and application.
- Proficiency with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), MS Office (Excel), and data-driven workforce reporting.
