We are currently recruiting for a Principal Process Safety Engineer. This full‑time position is based in Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta.

Responsibilities
  • Provision of technical assurance across the technical safety and loss prevention activities and deliverables.
  • Leading and coordinating the activities and deliverables allocated to the location in accordance with the project schedule.
  • Guidance on appropriate risk mitigation measures required for operational and integrity related Process Safety issues.
  • Guidance for operational issues on safety engineering systems including fire and explosion protection systems, and emergency facilities.
  • Knowledge and/or participation of industry/group led research or developments in the management of Process Safety hazards.
  • Contributing to maintenance and update of relevant safety engineering standards.
  • Provide guidance, development and lateral learning to other Process Safety Engineers.
  • Support the Lead Safety Engineer, project management and engineering disciplines with process safety concerns and queries.
  • Lead and manage specialist Process Safety Engineering Contractors, including work planning and prioritization, QA, and budgetary control.
  • Delivery of formal safety studies including Consequence Assessments, Fire Safety Studies, Escape and Muster Studies, Equipment Survivability Studies, and risk assessments both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Recommend any additional Technical Safety reviews necessary because of scope change, design development, etc., and check that all required Technical Safety Reviews are completed.
  • Facilitating hazard workshops for Process Safety hazards such as HAZID, HAZOP, SIL classification, and Facility Layout and Siting.
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in process safety and fire protection engineering.
  • Experience in production or engineering of oil and gas facilities, hydrogen, carbon capture, mining, and chemical industries.
  • Knowledge of applicable local and international standards, statutory and regulatory specifications.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the fundamentals of safety and risk engineering.
  • Experience performing facility siting studies, consequence modelling and QRA using proprietary software such as PHAST and SAFETI.
  • Experience designing active and passive fire protection systems, including fire water, sprinkler and deluge, clean agent, fireproofing, and fire zones, using proprietary software such as AFT‑Fathom and Pipenet.
  • Knowledge of risk‑based and performance‑based fire protection engineering.
  • Facilitating process hazard analysis and risk workshops.
  • Knowledge of local and international fire protection standards such as NFPA, API, ASME.
  • Experience in Greenfield and Brownfield EPC projects, pipelines, storage areas and terminals.
  • Experience designing fire and gas detection and alarm systems with detailed knowledge of fire alarm control panels, interface connections, wiring, cable routing, fire and gas mapping.
  • Team player, able to motivate peers, influence without direct authority, and manage change.
  • Positive and forward‑looking attitude focused on creating positive results rather than policing and enforcement.
  • Must be resident of Canada.
Education and Qualifications
  • Chemical Engineering degree or equivalent.
  • P. Eng (Alberta) designation.
