Position Overview
Welding Superintendents lead field welding operations, ensuring quality, safety, and productivity across all welding activities on the project. This role combines execution oversight with
quality control, supporting welders, coordinating subcontractors, and ensuring compliance with project welding standards and procedures.
District Overview
Kiewit Energy Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. We are a major industrial contractor of oil & gas facilities including oil sands processing, steam–assisted gravity drainage facilities, upgrading & refining, midstream facilities, power & co-generation, terminal projects (ex. LNG, LPG, etc.), and major mine developments.
Location
This position will be based on-site at a project in Fort Saskatchewan, AB or our Mod-Yard in Edmonton, AB. #LI-RP1
Responsibilities
Field Execution & Planning
Oversee daily welding activities and ensure crews are fully productive early in the shift.Plan and walk down work for the following day to ensure readiness and efficiency.Work closely with the General Superintendent to prioritize welding activities and sequencing.Establish and maintain a backlog of welding work, including setting up night-shift operations where required.Attend daily coordination meetings to communicate work plans, risks, and mitigation strategies.Crew Leadership & Development
Assign welders based on qualifications, certifications, and skill sets.Support training and development of welders, including coaching following weld repairs.Lead or coordinate welder qualification testing programs.Host regular welding meetings in alignment with project requirements.Quality Assurance & Compliance
Review NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) results and ensure all defects or indications are properly addressed.Ensure all repairs are completed using approved procedures and that root causes of defects are understood.Track and monitor welding productivity and inspection outputs (e.g., daily weld counts).Ensure all welding activities align with project specifications and the welding handbook.Technical Coordination
Coordinate with subcontractors (e.g., preheat, PWHT, DHT) to align work priorities.Develop and implement purge plans for specialty materials (e.g., stainless, alloy, chrome).Define and verify purge requirements, including gas type, flow rates, monitoring, and acceptance criteria.Engage with technical support groups (e.g., KWG) for training and technical inquiries.Equipment & Materials Management
Manage welding consumables and materials, including ordering and inventory control.Ensure welding tools and equipment are maintained, calibrated, and compliant.Remove non-compliant or out-of-calibration equipment from service until corrected.Maintain proper storage and control of consumables (e.g., rods, ovens).Qualifications
Journeyperson Welder or relevant trade certificationCWB, AWS, or equivalent welding-related certifications.Significant experience in industrial or construction welding supervision.Strong knowledge of welding processes, codes, and quality standards.Experience interpreting NDE results and managing weld repairs.Proven ability to lead field crews and coordinate multiple stakeholders.Strong planning, scheduling, and problem-solving capabilities.Experience working on large-scale energy, industrial, or infrastructure projects.Familiarity with specialty welding (e.g., stainless, alloy, chrome systems).Other Requirements:Regular, reliable attendanceWork productively and meet deadlines timelyCommunicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environmentPerform work safely and effectively.
