Job Description
The Children & Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for developing, leading, and growing engaging, Christ‑centered programs for children and youth in the St. Albert community. This role focuses on relational ministry through outreach initiatives, including the Bunker Youth Drop‑In and children’s programming, creating safe, welcoming environments where young people can build community, experience belonging, and encounter the love of Jesus.
Accountabilities
Bunker Youth Drop‑In Center Programming
Plan, organize, and lead weekly Bunker Youth Drop‑In programs.
Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging space for youth (ages approximately 11–17).
Build meaningful relationships with youth through consistent presence and mentorship.
Provide informal support, guidance, and referrals when appropriate.
Incorporate faith‑based elements including devotionals, conversations, and prayer in a relational and accessible way.
Run the Youth Alpha program within local schools.
Children’s Programming
Develop and lead children’s outreach programs including Baby Song and Mini Chiefs.
Plan activities including games, crafts, teaching, and faith formation.
Create environments that are fun, structured, and rooted in biblical values.
Support seasonal programs such as summer day camps and holiday events.
Community Engagement
Build relationships with families, schools, and community partners.
Promote programs within the community to increase participation.
Identify outreach opportunities to connect with youth and families.
Volunteers
Recruit, supervise, orient, support, and train volunteer leaders for youth programs in partnership with the Corps Officer.
May develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
Deal with volunteer complaints and incident reports.
Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules for those supervised in accordance with operational requirements ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions.
Ensure completion of police checks for volunteers, statement of applicant for work with children and youth forms, and online abuse prevention training.
Administration
Prepare and maintain written records/logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
Design and draft promotional material that highlights various programs provided by The Salvation Army St. Albert Corps & Community Center subject to supervisory approval.
May participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Youth Programs.
Communication
Communicate in an empathetic manner with families and staff.
Inform the Corps Officer and Community Ministries Officer regarding any concerns or issues in a timely manner.
Health and Safety
Maintain program storage areas (e.g., updating, safety, organizing).
Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform Other Work‑Related Duties As Required
Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Critical Relationship Management
Internal relationships:
Corps Officer, Community Ministry Officer, staff, volunteers. Attend/participate in staff meetings as required. Consult and work effectively, and in conjunction with local and program leaders.
External relationships:
Local Community Groups and Schools;
Families and community partners.
