Nurse Practitioner - Ortho Surgery Program  The University of Alberta hospital is a qua ternary and tertiary referral hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. A leader in surgical research since the 1950s, we are a Canada Accredited Trauma Service and Northern Alberta’s only level one trauma site with a catchment of over 2.5 million people. In 2023, our trauma team treated over 650 severely injured patients, including spinal injuries.

The Inpatient Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner (Ortho NP) is an advanced practice nursing (APN) role that will offer you the opportunity to integrate clinical skills to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to promote excellence in spinal care clinical practice. Utilizing your comprehensive knowledge base and excellent ability to work autonomously, you will develop cohesive care plans for acute orthopedic patients.

Description:

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems.

Required Qualifications:

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program, with a minimum of a Master s degree. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years (full time) of orthopedic or related experience as a registered nurse in acute care, and 1-2 years as a NP. Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills. Work with multidisciplinary team, develop/provide/modify treatment plans accordingly. Monitor ongoing care, provide first line care in emergencies. Functions with autonomy/authority with day-to-day clinical care responsibility across the Ortho Surgery Program.

Follow-up treatment/communicate with patients/families on health findings, diagnoses/prognoses; support/counsel patient in their personal responses to diseases/disorders, and conditions.
