Your Opportunity
Wetaskiwin has an exciting opportunity for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the Day Surgery Unit. The role is part of a large rural hospital, supporting surgical and endoscopy teams in a busy operating room with three theatres performing general, gynecological, ophthalmologic, and endoscopy procedures. Under the Alberta Surgical Initiative, the LPN provides safe, patient‑centered nursing care and care coordination within the Pre‑Admission Clinic, OR Booking, Small Procedures, and Day Surgery programs.
The LPN supports patients throughout the surgical journey, including referral, booking, pre‑operative assessment, education, procedural support, post‑operative care, and follow‑up. Key responsibilities include completing pre‑admission assessments, obtaining health histories, reviewing medications and allergies, coordinating diagnostic testing, confirming surgical requirements, processing referrals, managing waitlists, and coordinating operating room and procedure bookings. The LPN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, diagnostic services, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure patients are prepared and scheduled appropriately.
In the Small Procedure Clinic, the LPN provides nursing care before, during, and after procedures, including patient preparation, procedural assistance, post‑operative monitoring, discharge teaching, and documentation. The role promotes patient safety, infection prevention and control, and quality outcomes while serving as a liaison between patients, families, and the health care team. Practice is guided by CLPNA and CSA standards. Strong assessment, critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills are essential to support efficient patient flow and excellent patient care.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.
