Registered Nurse - First Assistant; RNFA)

Step into a dynamic and highly specialized role where your expertise directly shapes surgical outcomes and patient experiences. As a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), you will deliver enhanced perioperative nursing care across a wide range of surgical specialties within the operating room. In this role, you will work in close collaboration with surgeons and the perioperative team, assisting within the RNFA scope of practice and supporting patients throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care.

Responsibilities will be in accordance with Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) guidelines and organizational policies. Drawing on your in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and surgical techniques, you will contribute confidently and competently to surgical procedures and patient outcomes. This role emphasizes evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient advocacy, and continuity of care in a fast-paced, technologically evolving environment.

Your ability to adapt, think critically, and make sound clinical decisions will be essential to delivering safe, high-quality care. Professional Development Opportunity Candidates who are not yet RNFA-certified are encouraged to apply if they have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, at least five (5) years of current operating room experience, including intraoperative experience, and meet the RNFA Program admission requirements set by the National Institute of First Assisting (NIFA).

Successful applicants may be eligible for employer- supported RNFA certification through a structured education program delivered in partnership with NIFA. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.

PLEASE NOTE:

Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.
