The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking Parks and Transportation Operators to support our Public Works team during the spring/summer season (May-August). This seasonal role is essential to maintaining the places where people gather, travel, and enjoy the outdoors. If you love working outdoors, operating equipment and being physically active throughout the day, this position is for you!
Reporting to the Supervisor of Parks and Transportation, this position is responsible for supporting the beauty, cleanliness, and upkeep of the City’s parks, open spaces, cemeteries, playgrounds, and downtown streetscapes. The role contributes to maintaining a safe and welcoming community through regular maintenance activities and minor repairs within parks and public spaces. In addition, the position assists with the maintenance and repair of City roadways, drainage systems, sidewalks, and traffic signage.
These term positions are based on a 40-hour work week, working Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities
- Operate equipment, including but not limited to, self-propelled and/or self-riding lawn mowers, grass trimmers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, tamping bar, power washer, and various garden tools, in a safe and responsible manner.
- Clean and carry out minor repairs to tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Maintain sidewalks, pathways, and storm drainage network.
- Assist in cemetery lawn maintenance and general clean up.
- Perform landscape and ground maintenance activities including weeding, watering, fertilizing, seeding, turf installation and related duties.
- Lift and move medium weight objects 10 to 30 pounds and on occasion up to 50lbs.
- Repair roadways, curbs, and sidewalks.
- Maintain and promote public safety while performing assigned duties.
- Additional duties and special projects as required.
Education, Qualifications and Work Experience
- Minimum of Grade 12, or GED equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers License with clean abstract.
- Previous experience operating relevant equipment is an asset.
- Basic computer knowledge.
These positions may be subject to grant funding requirements which could require the successful candidates to be between the ages of 16 and 30. Funding approval has not yet been confirmed, and applications from all qualified candidates will be considered.

- Able to work independently and contribute positively to a cooperative and supportive team environment.
- Able to operate various equipment and tools (e.g. self-propelled mowers, grass trimmers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, tamping bar, power washer, garden tools etc.) in a safe and responsible manner.
- Demonstrate initiative and apply effective time management and organizational skills to complete assigned tasks efficiently.
- Demonstrate a strong service focus and the interpersonal skills needed to communicate professionally with the team and the public.
Physical Effort and Safety Commitment
The employee is responsible for full cooperation with all aspects of the City’s Occupational health and safety program, including compliance with all rules and regulations, and for continually practicing safety while performing their duties, and monitor and enforce subordinate compliance with the OH&S program. As a successful applicant you will need to be:
- Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
- Able to stand for long periods of time on a variety of surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, turf, etc.
- Able to safely handle and work with chemicals in accordance with safety procedures and regulations.
- Able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs, kneeling, crouching, walking, crawling, and completing tasks requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity.
