Your Opportunity

We currently have three openings for talented and ambitious Junior Environmental Technicians within our Calgary/Edmonton Offices. In this role, your main task will be to perform as a field assistant, however there may be some potential office related task. Field assistant tasks include assisting with field program planning, data collection & analysis, and technical reporting for a variety of field programs.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • As a field technician you may be involved in a range of field programs including, but not limited to conducting biophysical field surveys in accordance with provincial species detection protocols (e.g., rare plant and/or various wildlife surveys)

  • Conducting pre-construction surveys for nesting migratory birds, as well as for wildlife and plant species at risk

  • Conducting environmental assessments such as fisheries assessment, aquatic ecosystem studies, wetland delineation/classification, vegetation surveys

  • Supporting and assisting in the development of federal and provincial regulatory permits

  • Completing office tasks such as data management, analysis and interpretation, report preparation (e.g., As-Builts), and other general tasks

  • Complying with health and safety and quality management protocols

  • Interacting and communicating effectively with mentors, multi-disciplinary teams, regulators, clients, subconsultants, and contractors

  • Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Knowledge of biophysical and/or preconstruction survey types

  • Experience with wildlife and/or plant identification is considered an asset

  • Familiarity with or understanding of the Wildlife Regulations Act

  • Basic understanding of federal and provincial environmental assessment legislation

  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors

  • Technical writing and organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ownership and initiative

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural, historical, and political context in Canada

  • Well-developed computer skills such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word

  • Commitment to being away from home, staying in hotels or camps, working 12-hour days (including evenings and weekends) under a variety of conditions for 14 days at a time or longer

  • During field work you are likely to be exposed to inclement weather and difficult terrain

  • Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and solve problems in the field

  • Prioritize safety in all tasks

  • Able to lift 50lbs and endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude.

  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract

  • Additional skills such as current first aid training (OFA1), WHMIS, H2S Alive, UTV operator training, bird and plant identification, and mechanical aptitude are assets, but are not required

  • May be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and maintain that status for the duration of employment based on specific client requirements

Travel will be required for field work and may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.     Education and Experience

    Degree (in progress or completed) in biology or conservation, environmental biology/technology, renewable resources, ecology, or environmental sciences.
