Overview
The Registered Veterinary Technician position has the primary responsibility of providing quality care to the animal collection, assisting on a wide variety of standard clinical laboratory tests and analyses, and monitoring the overall health and well-being of our animals at Marine Life. This position provides the opportunity to gain experience as a care provider for exotic species.
Primary Responsibilities
Perform daily monitoring of Marine Life animals to identify pre-existing or new medical concerns, conduct essential laboratory tests and analyses, and maintain proper documentation of medical records and logbooks.
Handle laboratory testing and results, administer medications and prescriptions, and assist during medical procedures and examinations.
Assist in revising and developing preventative health programs as required and provide animal health care information and guidance to the Animal Care Attendants and Marine Life staff.
Respond to emergencies with first aid and care as needed, assist with the quarantine process for all new and/or ill animals.
Oversee animal quarantines.
Maintain all medical equipment, instruments, pharmaceuticals, and product inventories.
Contribute to ensuring adequate nutrition and diets are delivered to all species in the care facility.
Maintain animal medical records and communications between veterinarians; deliver treatment plans to animal care staff and train staff to implement treatments as required.
Other responsibilities as required.
Desired Qualifications
Registered Veterinary Technician or the ability to be professionally registered in the Province of Alberta, with membership in the Alberta Veterinary Medicine Association (ABVMA).
Knowledge of animal restraint, laboratory testing protocols and procedures, and accurate documentation and inventory management abilities.
Ability to remain calm in high-stress or emergency situations related to animal health and well-being.
Comfortable working in close proximity to a variety of animals and working in the water.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Terms Of Employment
This is a part-time position requiring flexible availability during days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and the ability to provide a clear Driver’s Abstract.
Must be able to pass a basic security clearance.
