Zone Medical Officers of Health

The Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services is building a more resilient and sustainable primary health care system that can support Albertans getting care when and where they need it, while responding to public health challenges, improving public health outcomes, and maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Responsibilities
  • Control communicable diseases, including surveillance, prevention, outbreak detection, and control.
  • Control environmental and other threats to population health.
  • Respond to public health emergencies and develop emergency response plans.
  • Promote community health and advance health equity.
  • Provide consultative expertise to other medical officers of health, physicians, healthcare providers, and stakeholders on patient and population public health issues.
  • Develop and implement public health practices and safety policies.
  • Support on‑call coverage as required.
  • Serve as an educator, preceptor, and mentor to improve public health knowledge.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external health stakeholders.
  • For the Zone Lead role: manage the Medical Officer of Health team in the Southeast/Southwest corridors.
Qualifications
  • Medical Doctor (MD) licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
  • Completed a fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, or other clinical training (e.g., CCFP or FRCPC) with additional public health training (e.g., Masters in Public Health) satisfactory to the Chief Medical Officer of Health.
  • Demonstrated project management, change management, and stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Licensed or eligible to practice in Community Medicine/Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
  • Experience in the Alberta government or Alberta health system is preferred.
  • Eligible for a security screening as required for final candidates.
Salary and Benefits

Salary: $10,605.50 – $14,462.83 bi-weekly ($ – $ annually).
