Position: Recreation Officer I - Youth Intervention Liaison

The Edmonton Police Service requires an individual to coordinate intervention supports within the Youth Diversion and Intervention Unit. The Youth Intervention Liaison will act as a resource and referral link between vulnerable youth identified by the Edmonton Police Service and organizations providing intervention programming in the greater Edmonton area.

The Youth Intervention Liaison will be imbedded within the Youth Diversion and Intervention Unit and partnered daily with an Edmonton Police Service, uniformed constable. As the unit works with at-risk youth, the Youth Intervention Liaison will assist EPS in offender management, diversion programs and coordinate youth intervention planning through community referrals and collaborative solution forums. Responsibilities will include:

  • Introduce intervention services to youth who are identified by police as needing extra community supports.
  • Support case management and crisis intervention strategies with numerous government and community stakeholders.
  • Maintain existing collaborative efforts with police, government and community agencies serving vulnerable youth populations.
  • Seek new resources and supports for high-risk youth within the City of Edmonton.
  • Provide input on safety planning in collaboration with supporting agencies.
  • Participate in educational presentations to the public and community stakeholders.
  • Provide youth development expertise to a variety of initiatives within the Youth Diversion and Intervention Unit.
  • Assist with updating various databases utilized to track community referrals.
  • Offer qualitative and quantitative outcome data to a variety of progress reporting systems.
  • Facilitate and coordinate referrals for youth within both custodial and community settings.
  • Job Requirements
    :
  • University graduation in Recreation Administration or a related degree in a specialized field (such as a Bachelor in Social Work) and a minimum of three (3) years experience in the field of community recreation with a demonstrated ability in program development, facility operation and/or provision of information/referral.
  • Must be registered and in good standing with the appropriate college/governing body relating to professional designation.
  • Experience working within and alongside law enforcement and youth custodial settings.
  • Deep understanding of the Missing Persons Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA) Protection of
    Children Abusing Drugs Act (PCHAD), and Protection of Sexually Exploited Children’s Act (PSECA).
  • Excellent advocacy and interpersonal skills to collaborate with professionals, stakeholders and other community supports.
  • Training in motivational interviewing and an understanding of suicide intervention strategies is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of community resources, and social issues in the City of Edmonton is an asset.
  • Ability to effectively implement Risk-Need-Responsivity model and risk assessment in supporting intervention plans.
  • Ability to lead and develop multi-agency projects that include community service partners.
  • Facilitation experience for both youth and adult audiences for training and information sharing purposes is an asset.
  • Training and experience in understanding and supporting diverse communities is an asset.
  • Training in Cognitive Behavioral theory and Trauma Informed practices is an asset.
  • Strong documentation, administration, time management and communication skills.
  • Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday – Thursday 0700
    -1700.
    Flexibility within the schedule may be required with advanced notice to support unit initiatives.

    Salary Range: 21B, Salary Grade 021, $39.16 - $49.22 (Hourly), $3,132,80 - $3,937.70 (Bi-Weekly), $81,766.08 - $ (Annually).
    These rates are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
