Job Opportunity
The Indigenous Cultural Helper (ICH) is integrated into the Pediatric Community Rehabilitation (PCR) multidisciplinary pediatric rehabilitation team. This role works closely with Allied Health professionals including OT, PT, SLP, SW, and CDS to educate health care providers on respectful relationships and culturally appropriate health care for Indigenous peoples.
DescriptionThe ICH serves as a primary support between Indigenous peoples and health care providers to improve access to PCR services for Indigenous individuals and communities in and around Edmonton. The role involves resource review, development, and engagement across disciplines to ensure cultural considerations, appropriateness, and sensitivity.
Required Qualifications- Traditional Indigenous Knowledge: experience, understanding, and recognition of Indigenous cultural beliefs, values, customs, traditions, healing ways, ceremonies, traditional medicine, and protocols.
- Knowledge of the impacts of colonization, residential schools, and intergenerational trauma, and how to respond to diverse cultural needs of Indigenous peoples.
- 1‑2 years of education in child development or rehabilitation (or registration in a related profession).
- 3‑5 years of work experience with children & youth aged 0‑18 years.
- 5 years of work experience with Indigenous peoples.
- Proficiency with computers, e.g., email, Teams, Zoom.
- Experience in conflict resolution, community development, and working within a holistic health approach.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, flexibility, initiative, good judgement, accountability, excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and strong problem‑solving and critical thinking abilities.
Required Qualifications
- Driver's license and vehicle (required if the role includes on‑site visits).
- Degree in humanities and/or social sciences.
- Lived experience with Indigenous history, values, culture, and beliefs, and proficiency in an Indigenous language.
- At least 2 years of experience working with children and youth in a health setting.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to integrate and support health professionals and families.
