The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) offers specialised diagnostic and treatment services to adult patients, as well as specialty ambulatory clinics located across the hospital campus. This Social Worker II position is part of the Social Work team and will be responsible for providing social work services to the adult population across inpatient units, including the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and High Intensity/Stroke Observation Unit.
The candidate will be a highly motivated, confident, and dependable individual who collaborates with team members, patients, and their families in a fast‑paced environment ensuring trauma‑informed, equitable care. The candidate will hold working knowledge of health care systems, SDoH, and community resources to support psychosocial interventions such as complex discharge planning, financial assessments, resource navigation, advocacy, and referral to internal/external agencies.
As a Social Worker II you are part of a team dedicated to providing quality patient‑centred care through best practices and evidence‑informed approaches, aligning with social work Code of Ethics.
Responsibilities
As a Social Worker II, you will be a member of an inter‑disciplinary team and provide a range of social work services to patients and their families. Your services may include:
psychosocial assessment
resource‑based interventions
individual, group and family treatment
risk screening
counselling
case management and coordination
transition or discharge planning
prevention, promotion and public awareness activities
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
Additional
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years’ experience working as a RSW in acute health‑care settings.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS‑HCP) certification is required.
Experience working with diverse cultural groups and vulnerable populations, demonstrating trauma‑informed, patient‑centred care.
Able to respond promptly and decisively using ethical, critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyse situations, advocate and determine successful outcomes.
Strong professional judgment and time‑management skills are necessary to prioritise tasks for effective functioning within the dynamic and challenging environment.
Ensure concise, timely and accurate communication, documentation and collaboration with colleagues, patients and families.
Experience with self‑direction for independent work, and with actively and positively contributing to an inter‑disciplinary team are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master of Social Work (MSW) degree is an asset.
Knowledge and ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook) and Connect Care is preferred.
Experience with relevant legislation including the Personal Directives Act, the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act; conflict resolution; and grief and loss are assets.
Compensation
Minimum Salary: $42.14 per hour. Maximum Salary: $56.02 per hour.
