About the Role

Are you passionate about the integrity of horse racing? Horse Racing Alberta is seeking a dedicated Judge or Steward Race Official to drive regulatory excellence and promote our culture, vision, and mission. In this pivotal role, you will represent Horse Racing Alberta at race meetings, enforcing the rules of racing and all relevant policies to ensure a fair, safe, and competitive environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adjudication & Enforcement:
    Enforcing track rules, conditions, and the official rules of racing across Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Standard bred Racing.
  • Race Meeting Governance:
    Overseeing race entries, scratches, and monitoring the conduct of racing officials, participants, and track personnel.
  • Licensing & Compliance:
    Granting or denying licensing applications (subject to HRA conditions), and reporting violations of the Act, rules, or license conditions to Horse Racing Alberta.
  • Reporting:
    Maintaining a daily activity log and providing required reports to the Director, Regulatory and Supervisor of Racing.
  • Fair Jurisdiction:
    Exercising authority in a fair, impartial manner while considering the interests of all stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education:

    High School Diploma. Completion of the Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP) course is considered a strong asset.
  • Industry

    Experience:

    Extensive experience in horse racing, management, or officiating.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Deep understanding of horsemanship, the care/training of racehorses, and rules governing Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Standard bred racing. Knowledge of legal procedures for conducting fair and judicial hearings is required.
  • Core

    Skills:

    Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong problem-solving abilities, situational awareness of other racing jurisdictions.
  • Digital Literacy:
    Proficient in daily computer operations (email, reporting software) and comfortable utilizing mobile devices/smartphones for real-time team communication and on-track reporting.
  • Pre-requisites:
    Must be eligible to work in Canada, possess a valid driver’s license, and successfully pass a criminal background check.
Working Conditions & Demands
  • Schedule:

    Requires open availability for shift work, including daytime, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. Overtime may be required.
  • Travel:
    Travel to various race meetings is required.
  • Physical Environment:
    Ability to work on-site, which includes standing, sitting, climbing, walking, bending, and typing for extended periods. Expect exposure to computer monitors as well as barn environments (animals/horses, dust, mold, and humidity).
  • Adaptability:
    Ability to work independently or as a team, multitask under tight deadlines, and proactively handle high-stress or emergency situations.
