Senior Data Scientist

Free Think Capital Inc. (FTC) is an investment management firm based in Edmonton, Alberta, with $1.5 billion under management. FTC serves as the quantitative and financial research team for the Wheaton Group, which includes a schedule I bank and two insurance companies. The team applies data science and builds models across financial functions such as capital adequacy, strategic asset allocation, valuation/pricing and automated decision making.

The Opportunity
FTC is hiring a permanent, full‑time Senior Data Scientist to join a small, highly experienced team of professionals from top hedge funds and academic institutions. The role focuses on identifying high‑impact business changes and working directly with stakeholders to develop data‑driven solutions.

Position Responsibilities

Develop the Generation 2 automated loan adjudicator.

Refine predictive credit‑risk models using advanced machine‑learning techniques.

Expand scope and feature sets to improve pricing and underwriting end‑to‑end.

Investigate new business innovation opportunities across the Wheaton Group.

Research and develop models that deliver measurable financial gains.

Translate analysis into real‑world business decisions.

Collaborate with an entrepreneurial team to facilitate data‑driven leadership.

Required Qualifications

Several years of experience in a data‑science role.

Undergraduate or graduate degree in computer/data science, statistics, mathematics or related field.

Proficient with large‑scale statistical analysis tools (R, Python, Stata, MATLAB, SQL, etc.).

Ability to evaluate the impact of data science and systemization on business outcomes.

Skill in navigating messy real‑world data and processes.

Independent, entrepreneurial mindset with strong collaboration skills across all organizational levels.

Excellent communication of technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience implementing machine‑learning‑based solutions.

Previous managerial or team‑lead experience.

Competency in data‑pipeline structuring and MLOps.

Finance or insurance industry experience is a plus.
