MDW Product & Process Qualification Intern, Software Development Intern (GUI...

The Recording Media Operation (RMO) MDW (Multi Disks Writer) Engineering team’s primary mission is to develop and deliver test solutions that enable media and product qualification across yield, quality, and reliability metrics. The team also plays a critical role in launch media and product builds, MDW process development, customer-based failure analysis, and the implementation of corrective actions.

The team is responsible for providing comprehensive software solutions, including machine firmware, graphical user interfaces (GUI), and failure analysis and monitoring tools to support mass production and product launch phases. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to an innovative engineering team while reporting directly to an Engineering Manager.

About the role - you will:

as a MDW Product & Process Qualification Intern, maintain and enhance internal engineering tools that support day-to-day operations and productivity. A key initiative is modernizing a legacy Windows desktop GUI originally built with Borland (end-of-life) into a maintainable, modern, cross-platform capable GUI using C++ and Qt. It is also encouraged to embed AI‑assisted capabilities that improve usability, diagnostics, and maintainability.

  • Assess and understand an existing Borland-based GUI application: screens, workflows, data flow, and dependencies.
  • Translate UI/UX and workflows from the legacy GUI into a modern Qt-based UI (Qt Widgets and/or QML depending on design direction).
  • Implement new UI components in Qt (forms, dialogs, table views, charts if needed), ensuring usability and consistency.
  • Integrate UI with existing C++ backend or refactor where appropriate for clean separation.
  • Fix defects and refactor code during migration (stabilize and improve maintainability).
  • Add a “Smart Diagnostics” panel in the Qt GUI which collects logs, error codes, status snapshots and helps summarize, classify, or suggest likely causes.
  • Create/maintain documentation: migration notes, build instructions, and UI mapping from old to new.
About you:

We're looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated intern who can thrive in a dynamic environment.

  • Curious and proactive: asks good questions and seeks clarity when needed.
  • Detail-oriented: UI migration requires careful mapping and validation.
  • Strong communication: gives concise updates, documents decisions, and raises risks early.
  • Team player: collaborates with engineers and users to get feedback.
Your experience includes:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering / Computer Engineering (or related).
  • Solid C/C++/python fundamentals (OOP, memory basics, STL).
  • Familiarity with GUI programming concepts (events/signals, state management, UI layouts).
  • Prior experience with Qt is preferred.
  • Able to work independently with guidance and communicate progress clearly.
  • Knowledge of electronics and statistics is preferred.
Location:

Our Woodlands site is one of the largest electronics manufacturing sites in Singapore, housing our recording media operations. Spread over three sites, it is easily accessible via bus or from the MRT Station, with many employees taking mass transportation to work. Here at work, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks at our onsite canteen and coffee shop. We offer a range of facilities including an in-house gym and dance studio, as well as after-work badminton and table tennis competitions.

On-site celebrations and community volunteer opportunities also abound.
