Position Summary:

Under the Summer Camp Director's direct supervision, the One-on-One Summer Camp Counselor supervises a child with special needs and diverse abilities enrolled in the YMCA's Summer Camp Program. The One-on-One Camp Counselor will guide daily camper activities while enforcing camp rules and policies. Expected Camp dates are late May until mid-August and is a seasonal position where the employee will voluntarily separate at the conclusion of the season.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide guidance for a camper with special needs/diverse abilities in daily activities
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism while performing each task as a One-on-One Summer Camp Counselor
  • Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with the child’s needs, abilities, and limitations
  • Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies
  • Follow and enforce camp rules with the ability to respond appropriately to accidents, incidents, and emergencies
  • Availability to work a 6-7 hour daily shift, which will either start at 6 a.m. or finish at 6 p.m., Monday–Friday, 25–40 hours per week
  • Ability to work ten (10) out of the eleven (11) camp weeks

    Requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of children, parents, co-workers, and adults
  • Experience working with children ages 5 to 13 years old, preferably children with special needs/diverse abilities
  • CPR/First Aid certification or obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities as well as be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of the community, social, and economic segments of the community

    Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously

    Must be able to handle stress and tension in a positive manner
