Position Summary:

Under the Summer Camp Director's direct supervision, the One-on-One Summer Camp Counselor supervises a child with special needs and diverse abilities enrolled in the YMCA's Summer Camp Program. The One-on-One Camp Counselor will guide daily camper activities while enforcing camp rules and policies. Expected Camp dates are late May until mid-August and is a seasonal position where the employee will voluntarily separate at the conclusion of the season.

Essential Functions:

Provide guidance for a camper with special needs/diverse abilities in daily activities

Maintain a high level of professionalism while performing each task as a One-on-One Summer Camp Counselor

Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with the child’s needs, abilities, and limitations

Adhere to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards

Attend staff meetings and training as required

Follow YMCA policies and procedures including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies

Follow and enforce camp rules with the ability to respond appropriately to accidents, incidents, and emergencies

Availability to work a 6-7 hour daily shift, which will either start at 6 a.m. or finish at 6 p.m., Monday–Friday, 25–40 hours per week

Ability to work ten (10) out of the eleven (11) camp weeks

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED

Ability to work well with a diverse group of children, parents, co-workers, and adults

Experience working with children ages 5 to 13 years old, preferably children with special needs/diverse abilities

CPR/First Aid certification or obtain within 30 days of hire

Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities as well as be able to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of the community, social, and economic segments of the community

Must be able to handle stress and tension in a positive manner
