Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Civil Engineer.

This position is accountable for the supervision of all field activities involved in the construction of one highly complex project or multiple related projects in a highway district.

Essential Functions
  • Provides adequate engineering supervision to contractors involved in highly complex construction projects.
  • Provides engineering solutions to design problems and unique conditions involving new construction techniques.
  • Maintains adequate project records and coordinates multi‑job projects so that they adhere to schedules.
  • Resolves complaints from private citizens and local government agencies regarding project inconveniences.
  • Ensures proper safety usage and traffic control by contractors.
  • Provides and maintains a safe work environment for subordinate personnel.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of public works.
  • Knowledge of plans and specifications for construction projects including highways, streets and structures.
  • Ability to supervise the work of other engineers and technicians.
  • Ability to perform difficult technical research and make comprehensive recommendations on engineering problems.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires district wide travel.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non‑State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non‑State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
