Position SummaryThe Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling, and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, handling and transporting specimens, preparation of slides, and maintaining necessary supplies. This role may include the collection of blood according to established procedures in a manner that supports quality patient care.
The position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
- Collect, handle, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing.
- Verify and label specimens, manage specimen transport.
- Prepare slides and maintain necessary supplies.
- Collect blood following established procedures.
- Provide quality customer service.
- Participate in performance improvement efforts.
- Adhere to laboratory fraud and abuse policies.
- High School Diploma or highest level of degree required;
Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions. - License/Certification: ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry eligible preferred. Previous hospital phlebotomy experience may be substituted for certification. Incumbents in a phlebotomist role must maintain 12 CEUs annually.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required effective 1/1/2021; all new hires must have BLS within 6 months of hire or transfer.
- Prior experience preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology required; knowledge of laboratory information system acquisition after 3 months training.
- Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents will receive training and must demonstrate proficiency within 30‑60 days of hire.
- Ability to distinguish colors. Must meet performance expectations as outlined on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Work EnvironmentPotential exposure to hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and injury. The position requires increased standing, bending, and manual manipulation, and light lifting.
