Overview
The Surgery Center Operating Room Assistant assists the surgical team during operating procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Assistant provides direct patient care as a retractor holder during surgery, assists with sterile setup, adjusts lights, cleans the operating room, and performs skin preparation prior to surgery under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Assistant also helps move and position the patient as directed, transports patients and equipment, and assists with personal care needs.
The Assistant communicates observations and data collection to the Clinical Associate and collects test specimens as directed, documenting patient care activities consistent with data collection and the tests performed. The Assistant collaborates with customers in a friendly, prompt, and confidential manner and works as part of the care team to meet customer and departmental objectives.
- Assist the surgical team during operating procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
- Provide direct patient care as a retractor holder during surgery.
- Arrange sterile setup, adjust lights, clean the operating room, and perform skin preparation prior to surgery under supervision.
- Move and position the patient as directed by the surgical Registered Nurse; transport patients and equipment.
- Assist patients with personal care needs and participate in the plan of care.
- Communicate observations and data collection to the Clinical Associate; collect test specimens as directed and document care activities.
- Provide quality customer service with confidentiality and respect; assist with stocking, inventory, and supply picking for procedures.
- Support performance improvement efforts and professional growth and development.
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Licensure/Certification: BLS required.
- Experience: Applicants will be trained; skill required within 30-60 days of hire/transfer. Ability to speak and write English required. Bilingual preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology required. Direct patient care experience or Patient Care education required. Previous surgical experience preferred. Interpersonal skills required for effective communication with team members. Flexibility, prioritization, problem-solving, and good judgment in difficult situations.
- Technical: Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; training will be provided and required within 30-60 days from date of hire.

Work Environment- Potential exposure to hospital hazards, including infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and potential injury.
- Requires considerable standing, reaching, and walking; ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
- Requires good hand/eye coordination, finger/hand dexterity, visual and hearing acuity, and ability to maintain retraction for long periods.
