Commercial Driver;
Class BClass B CDL Drivers are a vital part of our operation as we use various size trucks to service customers and perform moving work. A Class B CDL Driver is someone who earned their commercial driver’s license which allows them to operate any straight vehicle with a GVWR (gross vehicle) greater than 26,000 lbs. It also allows you to operate any vehicle towing a trailer that weighs less than 10,000 lbs.
In our industry, this commonly involves a straight truck that has enough capacity for most local moves and is more easily accessible than a tractor trailer in most neighborhoods.
Overall responsibilities include driving (which is essential to this job role), maintaining your Class B license including required physicals and random drug screening, monitoring equipment, leading a moving crew, managing the move by being the main point of contact on site with the customer, directing and working with the crew to pack, load and deliver, and communicating with dispatch and operations.
In the household goods industry, a Class B CDL Driver is a working position. There are physical and administrative tasks to perform in addition to driving.
Usual working days are Monday through Friday dispatched at 8:00am unless otherwise requested. Saturday crews are assembled when there is a Driver and crew to work, but not usually mandatory. Class B Drivers may be asked to take a shipment interstate within the region. This may be a day trip to PA or DE. Class B CDL Drivers sometimes load and deliver shipments that require being gone overnight - such as VT or VA.
A Class B CDL Driver is not usually asked to perform long haul Driving. You will be home each night 90% of the time. A part time Class B CDL Driver would be required to let dispatch know what days they are available at least three weeks in advance for proper planning. Driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) requires a higher level of knowledge, experience, skills, and physical abilities than what is required to drive a non-commercial vehicle.
To obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), an applicant must pass both skills and knowledge testing geared to these higher standards. Additionally, CDL holders are held to a higher standard when operating any type of motor vehicle on public roads. Serious traffic violations committed by a CDL holder can affect their ability to maintain their CDL certification.
