Responsibilities
  • Administrative Functions – Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing the long term care facility. Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department. Ensure reference materials (PDRs, regulations, professional standards) at nurses  stations are current. Recommend material to assist the nursing service department in meeting resident needs.

    Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and ensure compliance with its procedures. Prepare written and oral reports to the Director concerning the nursing service operation. Periodically review and revise department policies, procedures, and job descriptions. Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care. Ensure compliance with job descriptions, participate in quality assurance and facility surveys, and assist in discharge planning as required.

    Admit, transfer, and discharge residents; complete accident/incident reports; interpret policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies; perform administrative duties and maintain security and confidentiality of information.
  • Committee Functions – Attend facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment) and prepare reports of nursing service programs for those committees. Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee and participate in care plan committee agenda development and discharge plan reviews. Implement committee recommendations as directed by the Director.
  • Personnel Functions – Ensure adequate staffing by licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants for each shift. Develop work assignments and delegate authority to Charge Nurses. Ensure all nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs and supervise nurse aide trainees. Conduct daily rounds and report findings; monitor absenteeism; enforce policies and dress codes; review grievances; maintain interdepartmental relationships;

    foster a warm, professional environment; conduct periodic staff evaluations and staffing discussions; participate in disciplinary actions as needed. Address safety, privacy, and security concerns, and report incidents of fraud or unauthorized access to information systems.
  • Nursing Care Functions – Inform staff of admissions, room assignments, and ensure rooms are ready. Greet new admissions, accompany them to rooms, and coordinate rounds with physicians. Plan care with residents, families, and physicians; notify changes in condition and obtain timely physician notes and orders. Observe residents daily, ensure direct nursing care by licensed personnel or qualified aides, review nurses  notes for accuracy and alignment with care plans, perform direct nursing tasks as needed, and manage IVs, specimens, vital signs, and admissions/discharges.

    Use corrective actions as needed and keep the Director informed through reports. Authorize restraints per policy and supervise medication administration and charting. Inspect treatment areas and ensure safety and cleanliness. Monitor for call-bell responsiveness and communicate with families as needed. Arrange discharge transportation and notify families of resident death.
  • Staff Development – Develop and deliver in-service training; support facility in-service programs (OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control, etc.); plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees; participate in continuing education to maintain licensure.
