Responsibilities
  • Performs various chemical, microbiologic, and microscopic tests in laboratory areas to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Interprets results based on basic clinical information regarding patient age, sex, and condition.
  • Sets up, adjusts, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Obtains laboratory specimens via venipuncture or capillary puncture from inpatients and outpatients, across all age ranges (neonatal to geriatric).
  • Receives written or verbal orders from physicians for routine or special laboratory testing.
  • Documents results accurately in the hospital information system; notifies physicians of critical values and records communication.
  • Charts results to patient charts and files laboratory copies of report using LIS.
  • Identifies and labels specimens for retention and future reference.
  • Participates in the development of policies and procedures and identifies educational needs within laboratory areas.
  • Plans and/or teaches in‑services in collaboration with staff development programs.
  • Judges specimen adequacy; requests repeat specimens if initial samples are unsatisfactory.
  • Assists in quality control, quality assurance, and safety, meeting agency requirements.
  • Refuses to procure specimens from unwilling, rowdy, or improperly identified patients until situation corrected.
  • Maintains credentials at all times.
  • Performs order entry and programs instruments with expected QC ranges.
  • Establishes QC ranges, gathers and submits QC data for instrument peer comparisons.
  • Produces and maintains procedures for testing; oversees proficiency results and addresses discrepancies.
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors a departmental Quality Assurance Plan, including manual testing review, QC, and supervision of staff performance.
  • Teaches and manages Medical Technology and Laboratory Technologist students performing clinical functions; monitors their work.
  • Participates in selection, setup, installation, and validation of new analyzers and instrumentation, including interface validation with LIS.
  • Calibrates and challenges test linearity to monitor accuracy when needed.
  • Validates test orders and calculations in Meditech and EMR for accuracy.
  • Correlates testing between similar instruments.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots instruments; performs weekly, monthly, and as‑needed maintenance and monitors preventive maintenance compliance.
  • Maintains logs for maintenance, calibration, QC, etc., electronically or manually.
  • Keeps supplies stocked; orders supplies and monitors expiration.
  • Works directly with Laboratory Manager on all quality management aspects and any departmental concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong reading, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use for daily work.
Physical Demands
  • Occasional sitting; frequent walking and standing.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Eye‑hand, manual, and finger dexterity.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Works irregular hours and under stressful conditions.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, sharps, hazardous materials, and body fluids.
  • Occasional bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and grasping.
  • Overhead work occasionally required.
  • Occasional pushing and pulling of objects up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to distinguish letters or symbols.
  • Use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones, or copiers.
Working Conditions

Due to the laboratory function, staffing is required on a 24‑hour a day basis, seven days a week.
