Responsibilities
  • Assess staffing requirements and adjust staffing as needed, using the acuity system, department staffing guidelines, and other resources to identify required staffing levels.
  • Coordinate patient admissions with physicians, admission clerks, and nursing departments.
  • Provide care in all nursing departments as necessary and relieve staff for meal breaks when required.
  • Serve as a member of Discharge Planning, Infection Control, Code Blue, and/or Nursing Council Committees.
  • Act as a clinical expert and resource for other staff; represent administration outside of work hours.
  • Communicate with hospital personnel, department directors, and visitors.
  • Communicate with patients and/or families to educate them on disease processes, hospital stays, and treatments; meet patient needs for courtesy, information, physical care, emotional care, safety, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Inform Department Directors, Division Vice Presidents, and the President of problems and participate in resolution.
  • Participate in resource allocation and management, including monitoring and recording acuity statistics, staffing decisions, and maintaining the master schedule and staffing worksheets.
  • Obtain resources for all departments when Central Stores, Purchasing, Linen, Dietary, and Pharmacy are not open.
  • Observe and evaluate clinical practice and report observations to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate with external entities, resources, and facilities such as media, nursing facilities, organ procurement organizations, acute care hospitals, and mortuaries.
  • Communicate with appropriate facilities regarding autopsies.
  • Provide patient baths, oral care, and hair care.
  • Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
  • Collect intake and output information.
  • Ambulate patients.
  • Assist with patient mobility and positioning activities.
  • Collect urine and fecal specimens.
  • Obtain finger-stick blood glucose readings.
  • Transport patients by pushing, pulling, lifting in a wheelchair, bed, cart, or Geri chair.
  • Reposition patients with or without mechanical devices by lifting, pulling, and pushing.
  • Report patient care changes to RN and physician.
  • Collect patient care information.
  • Assist with revision of nursing care plans.
  • Administer medications and IVs, including narcotics, according to hospital policy.
  • Perform dressing changes.
  • Administer treatments such as NG tubes and Foley catheters.
  • Communicate with co‑workers clearly and concisely.
  • Organize and prioritize work to complete daily assignments.
  • Start IVs.
  • Document patient information concisely and legibly.
  • Follow the patient‑specific plan of care.
  • Assess the patient.
  • Follow all infection control procedures and policies, including universal/standard precautions.
  • Ensure patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement assurance, assessment, and improvement activities.
  • Notify the receiving nursing area of the patient’s condition and needs prior to transfer.
  • Participate in the orientation and teaching of newly employed nursing personnel.
  • Participate in nursing projects and/or revision and review of policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Will be oriented to and maintain competence in working with patients in the following age categories:
    Med/Surg, ICU (infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric), OB (neonate, adolescent, and adult), and ER (neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).

    Competence at the beginning of employment will be measured through observation during orientation, math and medication administration testing, and a review of documentation. Ongoing competence will be measured through observation of clinical practice, performance evaluations, competency in‑service and testing, and math and medication administration testing. See attached sheet for other initial and ongoing competence requirements by department.

    Experience:

    At least two years of clinical experience is required. Prefer 3–5 years, with experience in the ICU or ER setting; OB experience is also desirable.

    Job demands constant walking, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs, and pushing and pulling up to 35 lbs. Ability to handle full range of body motion, occasional twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching overhead is required. Eye‑hand coordination, finger, and manual dexterity are required. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range are required. Work will be under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

    Some exposure to communicable diseases and sharps is expected.
