Summary of Position

What you'll do:

LEARN’s Kids Play Program provides an organized gender-specific athletic league for boys and girls in grades 3-8. The emphasis of Kids Play is to provide an opportunity to participate in sports, build skills, and develop confidence in learning new and healthy fundamental lifestyle skills. The Kids Play program requires a knowledgeable set of coaches for a successful program. A Kids Play coach will be working in a fast-paced environment, and should be energetic while having the physical ability to be on their feet for long periods of time (standing, walking, and even running during sporting events).

Kids Play Coaches will be teaching relevant skills, tactics, and strategic techniques to students in order to reach team goals and individual milestones within specific sports offered by the program. The position entails monitoring and enhancing performance by providing developmental skill building, encouragement, and constructive feedback to a group of youth.

Distinguishing Features:

TK-8 Program: A Youth Leader may work with students from Kindergarten to 8th grade on age-appropriate academic, physical activity/sports, and/or enrichment activities. Programming typically occurs after school from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Monday - Friday and occasionally on weekends. Actual work hours will vary within these time frames depending on site and grade level assignment. Schools are located in El Monte, CA

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure the supervision and safety of assigned students at all times during program hours.
  • Evaluate performance and provide suitable feedback, balancing constructive criticism with positivity and motivation.
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses in a participant's performance and identify areas for further development.
  • Adapt to the needs and interests of the group or individual participant.
  • Facilitate successful practices using one’s knowledge and understanding of the current sport.
  • Demonstrate an activity by breaking the task down into a sequence.
  • Provide organized and structured physical activity.
  • Encourage participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge, and techniques.
  • Ensure that participants train and perform to a high standard of health and safety at all times.
  • Inspires confidence and self-esteem through motivation and skill building.
  • Acts as a positive role model, gaining the respect and trust of the people you work with.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Graduation from High School
  • Passing score on the district examination for Instructional Assistants (distributed in-office during the interviewing process)
  • Notes:

    • Experience working with youth in an educational setting is strongly desired.
    • Must have experience participating as a player in any competitive sport league(s).
    • Prior experience coaching sports is highly desired.
    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Interest in working with, mentoring, and/or tutoring at-risk youth
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, peers, school staff, and others
    • Ability to work as part of a team and act as a positive role model for students
    • Ability to write basic reports summarizing events
    • Knowledge and experience with sports (Basketball, Cross Country, Flag Football & Olympic Handball); previous experience coaching is desired.
    Language & Computer Skills

    The ability to speak Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese is desired at many of our school sites.

    Physical Skills
    • Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours.
    Additional Requirements
    • Must complete Live Scan and obtain Department of Justice and FBI Criminal Background Clearances, as well as Health Clearance (TB Test).
