Research Assistant Professor in Genomics and Transcriptomics

The Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a non‑tenure‑track faculty position as a Research Assistant Professor in the areas of Genomics and Transcriptomics, starting in Spring 2026. The appointment is for 12 months with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years, contingent on securing extramural funding. We are seeking innovative and highly collaborative scientists with a strong background in genetics, genomics, and/or molecular biology.

Applicants with expertise in the curation and analysis of large omics datasets—genomic, transcriptomic, and related—are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will:

  • Oversee the genomics section of the state‑of‑the‑art Genetics and Genomics Unit within the Department.
  • Participate in collaborative research programs across the Colleges of Science, Health Sciences, Engineering, and the School of Pharmacy.
  • Secure extramural funding independently or collaboratively.
  • Publish in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to the training of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and technical staff.
  • Conduct workshops and training sessions in genomics, proteomics, and related omics data analysis.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a relevant field and have a minimum of two years of post‑doctoral experience.
  • Demonstrate a strong record of research productivity and a clear potential to secure external funding.
  • Show proficiency in DNA and RNA extraction from cells, tissues, and blood.
  • Show expertise in genome and exome sequencing analysis, bulk and single‑cell RNA sequencing analysis, and data processing using HPC, Galaxy platform, and bioinformatics tools such as HISAT2, Salmon, Rsubread, DESeq2, etc.
  • Be proficient in programming languages such as Python and R for data analysis, modeling, and visualization.
  • Have experience with grant writing and contributing to research instrumentation grants.
  • Demonstrate success in collaborative research and peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Show ability to work effectively within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commit to involving students in research, mentoring, and publication opportunities.
  • Comply with laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and data integrity standards.

Preferred Skill Sets

  • Experience in analyzing proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and glycomics data.
  • Functional genetics skills (CRISPR, CRISPR screen, si/shRNA, transfection, transduction).
  • Core facility management experience, including day‑to‑day operations, user training, SOP development, and instrumentation troubleshooting.
  • Instrument method development and optimization, particularly sequencing methods.
  • Strong communication and reporting skills, including SOPs and training materials.
  • Successful teaching experience at the university or community college level.
