Cognito LLC, a Planned Systems International (PSI) joint venture, is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the ICE Health Services Corps (IHSC) at the El Paso Processing Center in El Paso, TX. As a civilian contractor working for Cognito, you will utilize your abilities as a Pharmacy Technician to provide the safe delivery of high-quality health care to those in ICE custody.

IHSC serves as the medical experts for ICE for detainee health care.

Essential Functions And

Job Responsibilities

As the Pharmacy Technician, the individual is responsible for the provision of a full range of pharmacy services at the assigned facility as well as ensuring compliance with the IHSC Pharmaceutical Services Directive and Guide.

  • Performs all duties related to preparation and dispensing of medication orders.
  • Provides direct care to patients within discipline scope of practice and performs functions in accordance with current accepted practice, licensure, certification, credentialing and/or granted privileges.
  • Provides treatment of persons throughout the life span as appropriate to discipline and facility setting.
  • May be expected to respond to and/or coordinate response to medical emergencies.
  • Reads prescriptions to determine drug name, strength, and dosage; correlates instructions with pharmacy policy limitations and notes.
  • Sets up prescriptions by obtaining drug stock, counting medication, and preparing containers; contents and labels are set aside for final check by a pharmacist.
  • Consults with the Clinical Services Manager or clinical pharmacist to clarify a prescription problem; recognizes when a physician or pharmacist must be contacted.
  • Uses judgment to determine when a pharmacist should be alerted to a therapeutic problem.
  • Prioritizes dispensing requests and acts when appropriate; collaborates with pharmacists as needed.
  • Arranges for pharmacist checks at preceding steps for new orders.
  • Receives supplies and checks receipts against requisitions; monitors shortages, breakage, deterioration, and expiration dates; report discrepancies to the pharmacist.
  • Performs computer entry of vouchers or invoices; determines stock levels and environmental impacts of drug shortages.
  • Prepares requisitions to prevent inventory problems; withdraws outdated drugs and handles disposal or returns as required.
  • Places supply orders through government and non-government sources; enters data for tracking and reporting; determines packaging and shipping needs.
  • Adjusts quantities to avoid depletion and notifies pharmacists of discrepancies.
  • Packages bulk drugs into specified quantities and containers; operates tablet, capsule counting, and labeling equipment.
  • Records all prepackage information for final pharmacist check.
  • Daily checks of medicine cabinet and night pharmacy areas; refills missing items as needed.
  • Inspects and logs refrigerator temperatures; reports problems.
  • Conducts orientations on pharmacy policy and practice for new staff, as directed with a pharmacist.
  • Keeps staff informed of protocol changes, drug recalls, and patient safety considerations.
  • Utilizes a computer to enter and tabulate data for workload records and statistical analysis; prepares quarterly reports on drug usage and discrepancies.
  • Maintains familiarity with the program's databases, including adding new patients, doctors, and drugs; edits prescriptions and queries data as needed.
  • Adds new patients to medication lines and DOT lists as appropriate; prepares MARs and related records.
  • Maintains clean equipment and work areas; adheres to program policies and confidentiality requirements (HIPAA/Privacy Act).
