What is a Community School? – A partnership school that brings every resource from the community together to support student success and family strength. The focus of the Community Schools program of the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is to not only support academic services, but also to integrate healthcare, social services, youth programs, community development, and other community engagement opportunities for the betterment of the entire neighborhood to build long‑term sustainability.
Ameri Corps VISTA members will assist in developing Community Schools at close to 30 campuses throughout EPISD, building capacity in food security, health services, housing, job training, adult education, prevention and recovery programs, child care, and after‑school/enrichment programs.
The VISTA member will support the strengthening and expansion of the EPISD Community Schools program. Members will be involved in asset mapping, needs assessments, and other activities that will help build the capacity and sustainability of the program. Additionally, VISTA members will help design and develop program plans to enhance learning, develop a database of participants, organize, plan, and implement enrichment opportunities for students and families, and serve as a liaison between campuses, community partners, and the school district.
