Position Summary: Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in propagating, cultivating, and harvesting horticultural specialties such as shrubs, annuals, perennials, flowering plants, potted arrangements, and native plant materials throughout the entire UTEP campus. Supervises the UTEP Grounds Department greenhouse and coordinates activities of employees engaged in landscaping projects, field maintenance, sod replacement, and event support.

Essential Functions:
  • Supervises landscaping projects and develops seasonal vegetation plans for landscaped areas throughout campus property.
  • Monitors performance, enforces compliance with safety and operational policies, and implements corrective actions as needed.
  • Develops and oversees work schedules, staffing plans, and resource allocation to maximize efficiency across departments.
  • Coordinates cross‑functional efforts with other trade supervisors and department leaders to support seamless project execution and timely completion.
  • Evaluates landscape and vegetation needs, instructs grounds maintenance personnel on fertilizer and pesticide application needs.
  • Oversees landscaping efforts, including irrigation system efficiency, vegetation selection, and maintenance of athletic fields.
  • Supervises multidisciplinary maintenance teams, ensuring effective execution of daily operations and long‑term maintenance strategies.
  • Develops protocols and procedures for plant species care and cultivation techniques and maintains an inventory of all plant materials on campus.
  • Collaborates with Irrigation Supervisor and Grounds Manager to implement decorative plant arrangements.
  • Prepares landscape plans and schedules coordinated growing and planting activities; maintains inventory of propagation operations.
  • Maintains inventory of growing equipment, supplies, and orders additional materials as needed.
  • Oversees greenhouse operations: fertilization programs, humidity, temperature, ventilation, CO₂ conditions; coordinates with Chemical Applicator for herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides within Integrated Pest Management guidelines.
  • Inspects and identifies repairs, malfunctions, and improvement opportunities for the greenhouse.
  • Observes plant growth and conditions to developропа treatment plans and seasonal planting plans for staff to adhere to.
  • Trains new and current employees in landscape maintenance and gardening techniques such as planting, germinating seed, transplanting, trimming, pruning,stem for a huge quantity,weeding, feeding, watering, spacing, grading, event pot delivery and presentation, packaging activities, and customer service.
  • Provides guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations for subordinate supervisors and technical staff, fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.
  • Utilizes institutional software to receive, assign, and complete work orders, including labor time and costs.
  • Must be available on an “On‑Call” basis.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and ability to learn institutional software systems.
  • Complies with all State and University policies.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s objectives, policies, and applicable laws.
