Budyko Research Institute is seeking a knowledgeable and engaging Nuclear Science Field Guide to support a specialized educational field expedition exploring nuclear science, uranium geology, mining, nuclear energy, and New Mexico's nuclear history.
This is a 4-day contract field position in New Mexico, with the potential for recurring expeditions approximately once per month, depending on tour scheduling and participant enrollment.
We are looking for someone who combines scientific knowledge with excellent communication skills, an engaging personality, and confidence working in an outdoor field environment.
The ideal candidate will:- Hold a master’s or doctoral degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, geology, geochemistry, physics, mining engineering, or a closely related scientific or technical field, or hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field combined with substantial professional or industry experience.
- Have professional, academic, or field experience in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, geology, geochemistry, uranium resources, or a related field.
- Understand the nuclear fuel cycle, including uranium exploration and mining, processing, fuel production, and energy generation.
- Have knowledge of the Manhattan Project, New Mexico's nuclear history, and the scientific and historical significance of Grants, Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and surrounding areas.
- Be an excellent educator, storyteller, and science communicator who can make complex scientific and technical subjects understandable and engaging for non-specialist audiences.
- Be personable, approachable, enthusiastic, and comfortable engaging with participants. A good sense of humor is a plus.
- Enjoy the outdoors and be comfortable with hiking, field excursions, extended vehicle travel, variable terrain, elevation, and changing weather conditions.
- Be resourceful, safety-conscious, and adaptable when dealing with unexpected field situations, itinerary changes, or logistical challenges.
- Candidates based in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, El Paso, and surrounding areas are encouraged to apply. Each expedition will begin and end in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the designated meeting point.
- Have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable traveling throughout New Mexico as part of the expedition.
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Be able to work independently while collaborating effectively with the expedition team.
We are looking for more than technical expertise. The right person can connect science, geology, energy, history, and landscape into a compelling story while creating an engaging and memorable experience for participants.
CompensationCompensation: $1,200–$2,000 per 4-day expedition, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Lodging, meals, transportation during the expedition, and tour-related admissions are covered.
