Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive, patient‑centered medical care, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute, chronic, and preventive health needs within specialty.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, effective, and coordinated care.
- Perform specialty‑specific diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or surgical procedures consistent with training and credentialing.
- Contribute to teaching, mentorship, and professional development of medical staff, students, and trainees.
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical innovation initiatives to advance healthcare delivery.
- Board Certified in the specialty of the position applied for (or a waiver for active pursuit of Board Certification). Verification of an active and valid certification standing is required.
- Work in an IHS health care facility may be subject to employee health policies related to measles, rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations; vaccine exemption requests may be available per unit guidance.
- Maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including all licensure requirements. Failure to maintain privileges may result in removal from Federal service.
- Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Undergo a pre‑employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Continued employment is contingent on a complete background investigation result.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited U.S. or Canadian school. Equivalent degree must be accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the AMA, AAMC, LCOMED, COCA, or recognized U.S. Department of Education accreditation.
- Foreign medical school graduates must demonstrate equivalency via ECFMG certification or other recognized equivalency evidence.
- Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician in a U.S. state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
- At least one year of supervised clinical experience after graduation (internship or first year of residency in an accredited program).
- For GS‑14: four years of graduate training in the specialty of the position or equivalent experience and training. Board Certification (ABMS or NBPAS) or successful completion of an accredited residency within the past three years is required.
Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a six‑month service agreement may be required. The Indian Health Service, National Health Service Corps (NHSC), and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) offer Student Loan Repayment Programs for qualifying health disciplines.
