About the San José Public Library
The award-winning San José Public Library (SJPL) serves a diverse community of roughly one‑million residents through 24 branch libraries across San José, including the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, which is jointly operated with San José State University. SJPL circulates more than 8 million items per year and attracts over 6 million visitors annually.
Position OverviewWe are hiring librarian positions to fill full‑time and part‑time benefited roles in the Librarian I and Librarian II classifications. The schedule will include evening, Saturday, and Sunday shifts. The ideal candidate supports the Mission, Vision & Values of the City of San José and the Library, demonstrates active customer service, upholds intellectual freedom and access to information, has current library technology knowledge, and possesses programming or project management ability.
Responsibilities- Program for all ages, story time, innovative school and community engagement programs, outreach, coding and STEAM programming, volunteer engagement.
- Deliver courteous customer service and intellectual freedom, ensuring access to a vast array of ideas and information.
- Use current library technology and trends and lead or participate in project management.
- Collaborate with a diverse community and staff, maintaining an inclusive environment.
- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university.
- For Librarian II: one year professional library experience.
Full‑time hourly: $44.86–$54.54. Part‑time benefited hourly: $44.86–$54.54 or $46,650.24–$56,718.48 annually. Full‑time annual: $93,300.48–$. Librarian II hourly: $49.35–$60.03 or $51,324–$62,429.64 annually (part‑time). Full‑time Librarian II annual: $–$.
Salary includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non‑pensionable compensation.
Selection ProcessThe process consists of evaluation of training and experience, application questions, and interviews. Answers to all questions are required.
