Position: Principal Licensing Engineer United States

Radiant is an El-Segundo, CA-based clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years.

Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Principal Licensing Engineer

Radiant is seeking an experienced Licensing Engineer who loves to think outside the box and challenge convention; in this role you are responsible for the license application process with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This role is critical to bringing the world’s first portable nuclear microreactor to commercialization in a timely manner. You will be responsible for regulatory submissions and timelines, collaborating across technical teams, and writing the formal application.

You will lead interactions between regulators and the engineering team to obtain clarity and answers on regulation. You will integrate analysis and test results from the design teams with supporting justifications and own the deliverables that make up a full license application. This is an opportunity to bring advanced nuclear technologies to market while also influencing the federal government and modernizing regulation.

Responsibilities:

  • Track overall application timeline and progress, ensuring major milestones are met.
  • Collaborate with others on the regulatory team to ensure a cohesive application that meets Radiant’s short and long term goals.
  • Own end to end licensing execution efforts required to fulfill an application deliverable, ranging from detailed safety analysis to a physical protection plan.
  • Facilitate collaborative and cohesive partnerships with internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies (NRC) to drive desirable results using streamlined, modern regulatory approaches.
  • Oversee execution by technical teams including design reviews and regulatory and quality documentation; organize their inputs into data products and reports; raise regulatory concerns and see through timely and successful resolution.
  • Proactively review approaches and decisions as they relate to regulatory efforts to ensure adherence to Radiant’s novel and efficient licensing paths.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or similar technical field from an accredited institution.
  • 10+ years of experience, with at least 5 years in nuclear programs regulated by the NRC or DOE.
  • Experience working in a heavily regulated field, directly interfacing, interpreting and implementing regulatory requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation abilities; ability to navigate regulatory conversations effectively and write technical documentation.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the relationship between the quality assurance program and regulatory compliance; experience with programs such as NQA-1, ISO
9001, AS9100, or other industrial standards.
  • Experience in emergency preparedness, fire protection, safety analysis, radiation protection or other related regulatory subjects.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals with an ability to understand and translate applicable portions of system design into a license application.

Total Compensation and Benefits

Radiant's new hire compensation package includes base salary, substantial equity grants, and comprehensive benefits. Total compensation and level are determined through a holistic evaluation of your interview performance, experience, education, and qualifications.

Benefits and Perks for Eligible Employees:

  • Stock:
Substantial incentive stock plan for all full-time employees.
