About the role

Job Title:

Sub Agent

Location:

Elgin

Project Type:
Civils / Energy

Company:
Balfour Beatty Group

Balfour Beatty is delivering the civils package on the BBNP project, a major energy infrastructure scheme in the North of Scotland that plays a critical role in strengthening the UK’s electricity network and supporting long‑term energy resilience. This is a high‑profile project within Balfour Beatty’s energy portfolio, offering a stable and long‑term opportunity for civil engineering professionals who want to work on nationally significant infrastructure.

The scope of works includes the full range of enabling and permanent civil engineering activities required to support complex electrical installations. This covers bulk and detailed earthworks, reinforced concrete foundations and structures for major electrical assets, cable trenches and ducting, drainage infrastructure, and the construction of internal access roads, pavements, and hard standings. The project also involves temporary works, site logistics, fencing and security infrastructure, and close coordination with electrical installation and commissioning teams to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

Joining the BBNP project gives candidates the opportunity to develop their skills on a technically challenging scheme, gain valuable experience within the energy sector, and build a long‑term career with a Tier 1 contractor that has a strong pipeline of future infrastructure and energy projects across Scotland and the wider UK.

What you'll be doing
  • Supporting the Site Agent in the day‑to‑day management and delivery of the BBNP civils package, ensuring works are completed safely, on programme, and to specification
  • Taking operational responsibility for defined areas of the works, coordinating site activities across earthworks, drainage, reinforced concrete, ducting, and access infrastructure
  • Leading and supervising Section Engineers, site engineers, and supervisors, providing clear direction and technical guidance
  • Managing and coordinating subcontractors and direct labour, ensuring productivity, quality, and safety expectations are met
  • Assisting with the planning and implementation of works, including short‑term programmes and look‑ahead planning
  • Ensuring method statements, risk assessments, and temporary works are in place, understood, and followed on site
  • Monitoring progress, identifying risks and constraints, and supporting the delivery of works to agreed milestones
  • Overseeing quality control, inspections, and QA documentation, ensuring compliance with project and client requirements
  • Promoting and embedding Balfour Beatty’s health, safety, quality, and environmental standards across all site activities
  • Supporting a positive, collaborative site culture aligned with Balfour Beatty values and behaviours
Who we're looking for
  • An experienced Sub Agent with a strong background delivering civil engineering projects, ideally within the energy, infrastructure, or major civils sectors
  • Proven experience supporting or leading the delivery of defined sections of work on large, complex construction projects
  • Solid technical understanding of core civils activities including earthworks, drainage, reinforced concrete, ducting, and temporary works
  • Confident managing site teams, engineers, and supervisors, providing clear leadership and direction on site
  • Experienced in coordinating subcontractors and direct labour to achieve programme, quality, and safety objectives
  • Strong working knowledge of method statements, risk assessments, permits, and temporary works procedures
  • Demonstrable commitment to health, quality, and environmental excellence, aligned with Tier 1 contractor standards
  • Able to work collaboratively with Site Agents, Project Managers, and commercial teams to support efficient project delivery
  • Proactive, well‑organised, and capable of managing multiple work fronts in a fast‑paced environment
  • Relevant civil engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience working on projects in Scotland and familiarity with local standards and site conditions is advantageous
