Position Goals

The Assistant Principal works collaboratively with the school principal to support the success of all students, including strengthening staff capacity, promoting a positive and inclusive school culture, and fostering family and community partnerships. Inherent in this role are responsibilities related to instructional leadership, staff evaluation, student support systems, service coordination, and school operations. The Assistant Principal plays a key leadership role in supporting the school’s culture and climate—including, but not limited to, student behavior, discipline, and attendance systems—ensuring alignment with the district’s strategic priorities and continuous improvement efforts.

Job Duties & Accountabilities Mission, Vision, and School Improvement
  • Coordinates efforts with building principal to establish and implement a shared mission and vision for the school that leads to academic growth for all learners.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of the school Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and associated academic and culture/climate goals.
Leadership – Curriculum and Instruction
  • Develops, in collaboration with principal and staff, consistent instructional practices which reflect effective teaching and learning that includes a rigorous and relevant standards-based curriculum.
  • Collaborates with the principal and staff to support consistent instructional practices and a rigorous, standards-based curriculum.
  • Establishes, in collaboration with the principal and staff, a continuous improvement cycle that uses multiple forms of data and student work samples to support individual, team, and school-wide improvement goals, identifies and addresses target areas for improvement, measures outcomes and celebrates successes.
  • Contributes to a continuous improvement cycle using rigor walks, learning classroom visits, student work, assessment data, and feedback to inform school-wide goals and instructional practices.
  • In collaboration with the building principal, evaluates the effectiveness of instruction and of individual teachers by conducting formal and informal observations and provides timely, specific targeted, actionable feedback on instruction as part of the district teacher appraisal system.
  • Works with the principal to support and facilitate teacher teams and professional learning communities.
  • Facilitates and supports teacher teams and professional learning communities focused on improved instructional outcomes.
  • Participates in and helps lead professional learning aligned to instructional and operational leadership priorities.
  • Leads Tier 2/3 MTSS meetings, tracking and monitoring.
Student Services and Special Education Leadership
  • Is a critical part of the service team, leading and facilitating special education meetings, including but not limited to initial domains, annual reviews, and re-evaluations.
  • Serves as the building-level LEA representative, responsible for leading and facilitating special education service team meetings, including domains, eligibility, IEPs, re-evaluations, and annual reviews.
Student Safety and Culture
  • Promotes a positive school climate by leading efforts to support student behavior, discipline systems, restorative practices, and school-wide attendance initiatives.
  • Trains the crisis team and building staff in verbal de-escalation, timeout, and holds techniques, restorative practices, and/or trauma informed care in alignment with ISBE and District guidelines.
  • In partnership with the principal, creates, develops and sustains relationships that result in active student engagement in the learning process.
  • Builds relationships with students, staff, and families that support engagement, trust, and student agency in learning.
  • Collaborates with the principal to foster a school culture that values cultural diversity, embraces multiple perspectives, and promotes high aspirations and academic achievement for every student.
