Com Ed - Testing and Commissioning Senior Engineer (Chicagoland) role at Exelon.

Exelon is leading the energy transformation. The Testing and Commissioning engineers are a front-line field engineering force that commissions, maintains, and troubleshoots transmission and distribution level protection and control systems inside Com Ed substations. System and equipment types include protective relays, SCADA, substation automation, power and control equipment, fiber-optic, power line carrier, and revenue metering.

Primary Purpose

Testing and Commissioning engineers perform field testing and commissioning activities associated with installation of new equipment, along with troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance of existing equipment. They create commissioning plans, write livening procedures, create and run test plans, analyze results, and compare with expected values. They troubleshoot and perform field investigations for malfunctioning power equipment, system events and protective relaying misoperations, support corrective maintenance, and perform preventive maintenance on protection system components and SCADA.

Position may require extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or energy delivery emergencies.

Primary Duties

They are the technical authority in the field, providing leadership by directing and supporting substation maintenance and contractor crews. They interface with Central T&S Engineering, Work Management, Project Management, Operations, Data Maintenance, and Substation Maintenance to support daily activities. They support substation outage/work planning, maintain engineering drawings and relay/SCADA databases, aid in NERC/CIP audits, and support maintenance programs. They are advocates of safety culture and enjoy hands-on field work, troubleshooting, and potential overtime.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) – knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes, methods, and practices
  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues
  • Minimum of three related career experiences or equivalent qualifications (e.g., lead roles, professional licensure, advanced degree, PM certification)

  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all management levels
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Technical experience related to electrical power equipment
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience
  • Demonstrated team leadership on critical projects
