The CAD Designer II – Fire Alarm Systems is responsible for preparing detailed fire alarm system drawings, plans, and documentation in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, and project requirements. This role serves as a key technical contributor within the Fire Alarm Division, translating design intent into clear, buildable drawings that support efficient installation and inspection. The Designer II operates with minimal supervision, demonstrates strong code knowledge, and supports project success from design kickoff through closeout.
This role is located in Elgin, Illinois.
- Prepare and revise fire alarm system drawings using CAD software, including floor plans, riser diagrams, device layouts, and system details.
- Design fire alarm systems in compliance with NFPA 72, local codes, AHJ requirements, and company standards.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineers, Sales, and Field Technicians to ensure drawings reflect project scope, site conditions, and installation realities.
- Review architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings to identify coordination requirements and potential conflicts.
- Incorporate redlines, field markups, and as-built information accurately and efficiently.
- Assist with submittal packages, including drawings, calculations, and supporting documentation.
- Participate in internal design reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.
- Maintain organized project files and follow established drafting and documentation standards.
- Support junior designers or drafters as needed through collaboration and technical guidance.
- Continuously build knowledge of evolving codes, technologies, and best practices within the fire alarm industry.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in fire alarm system drafting or design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (fire protection or electrical drafting experience preferred).
- Working knowledge of NFPA 72, fire alarm devices, panels, and system architecture.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, specifications, and code requirements.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- NICET Level II Certification in Fire Alarm Systems (required or strongly preferred, depending on internal standard).
- Experience designing systems for commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, or multi-tenant facilities.
- Familiarity with local AHJ submittal and review processes.
- Experience supporting project lifecycle from design through closeout and as-built documentation.
- Primarily office-based with prolonged periods of computer and desk work.
- May occasionally require walking job sites, bending, or standing for short durations.
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs as needed for drawings, files, or office materials.
